About Alocasia 'Regal Shields'

Alocasia 'Regal Shields' combines the large scale of Alocasia odora with the crisp, corrugated venation of Dragon Scale breeding. Its huge, shield-shaped leaves are a deep matte green so dark it reads almost black in low light, with pale, sharply recessed veins across a thick, waxy surface. Sturdy upright petioles hold the foliage well clear of the pot, giving mature plants a large presence as a floor specimen. It is a vigorous, relatively forgiving grower for its size, which has made it a popular choice for collectors moving beyond windowsill-scale Alocasias.

Species-specific things to check when evaluating a listing

  • Leaf should read as a deep matte green so dark it appears almost black in low light, with pale, sharply recessed veins; a lighter or glossier leaf suggests a different Alocasia
  • Mint and Pink colour forms have sold for over £200 on retail listings, ten times the base plant's price; confirm exactly which form is being offered before paying a premium
  • Factor in eventual size (90-150cm); this is a large floor specimen, not a compact tabletop plant
  • Given the fast growth rate for a large-leaved Alocasia, check the current leaf count and pot size are consistent with the asking price

Odora's Scale, Dragon Scale's Texture

Regal Shields combines two quite different parents (the sheer size of Alocasia odora with the crisp, corrugated venation associated with baginda 'Dragon Scale' breeding), and the result is a genuinely large plant with a leaf surface that reads almost black in low light, thanks to pale, deeply recessed veins against a thick waxy blade. That scale is what sets it apart from most jewel Alocasia: this is a floor specimen, not a shelf plant, reaching 90cm to 1.5m at maturity. The Mint and Pink colour forms bred from this cross have traded at roughly ten times the plain plant's price on recent retail listings, which says a lot about how much rarer stable variegation is here.
