About Alocasia odora

Alocasia odora, commonly known as the Night-scented Lily or Upright Elephant Ear, is a widely grown species native to East and Southeast Asia. It is popular for its large, broadly ovate, light-to-medium green leaves that face upwards with slightly wavy margins. The leaves grow on thick, fleshy green petioles that arise from a stout stem base. It gets its species name from its fragrant pale green or yellow spathe flowers that release a sweet scent, especially at night.

Species-specific things to check when evaluating a listing

  • Widely available and inexpensive, so be cautious of pricing that implies rarity for the plain species
  • Leaves should face upward on thick fleshy petioles rather than droop, consistent with the described growth habit
  • For Variegata or California forms, confirm variegation pattern in photos rather than relying on the listing title alone
  • Given the large mature size (1.2-2m), check the current pot size and leaf count match a fair price for the plant's actual maturity, not just the species name

Scented at Night, Overlooked by Day

Odora's species name refers to its fragrant pale green or yellow spathe flowers, which release their scent mainly after dark, a trait that has nothing to do with the foliage most buyers are actually shopping for. As a large, fast-growing, widely available species, it sits at the affordable end of the genus, which makes the Variegata and California forms bred from it worth checking carefully against reference photos rather than assuming the listing title is accurate. Price has ticked up slightly over the past three months, but this remains one of the more common Alocasia in UK circulation.
