Alocasia spans two very different collector interests: small, dark 'jewel' species grown for leaf colour and vein contrast, and large-leaved giants that develop trunks over time. Sitting between them are the genus's variegated sports: spontaneous white or cream sectoring that arose in tissue culture and is propagated as a distinct, less vigorous line from the plain-leaf parent.
