About Aglaonema 'Red Valentine'

Red Valentine is one of the most widely sold colour Aglaonema hybrids, with large ovate leaves heavily speckled in bright red and pink over a green base. Like most modern Aglaonema colour cultivars, it comes out of commercial Thai and Filipino breeding programmes that rarely publish exact cross records, so it's best treated as a named hybrid selection rather than a documented sport of any single wild species. It shares the genus's famously tough constitution, genuinely one of the most forgiving colourful houseplants available.

Species-specific things to check when evaluating a listing

  • Widely available and inexpensive; be cautious of pricing implying rarity for this common colour hybrid
  • Confirm the pattern is dense speckling of red and pink over a green base, not the more centre-concentrated pink of Lady Valentine
  • Exact parentage isn't publicly documented; treat 'rare cross' claims from sellers with caution
  • Check for firm, undamaged nodes on multiple canes for a fuller specimen

The Default Colour Aglaonema

Red Valentine is the one most people mean when they picture a colourful Aglaonema, and it's easy to see why: dense red-and-pink speckling over green, on a plant that's genuinely as forgiving as the plain green species underneath it. Like most of the commercial colour lines out of Thailand and the Philippines, the exact cross that produced it isn't published, so it's best understood as a named selection rather than a documented hybrid with known parents. Its ubiquity is also worth noting when a listing prices it as if it were scarce, because it isn't.
