About Anthurium bonplandii 'Variegated'
Chimeral variegated form of Anthurium bonplandii, the section Pachyneurium bird's-nest anthurium from Colombia, Venezuela and the Guiana Shield. Leaves carry irregular cream, pale yellow or lime sectors and marbling over the dark green base, and the pattern differs from leaf to leaf. The plant keeps the species' rosette habit, thick leathery blades and dark glandular dots on the underside. Most plants in circulation are tissue-culture propagated in Thailand and Indonesia, so leaf-to-leaf expression varies more than on older division-grown stock.

Variegation is chimeral and not carried through seed. Offsets keep the pattern only if they arise from variegated tissue at the base; an all-green offset will stay green. Tissue-culture batches include reverted and near-white plantlets.

Chunky, free-draining mix: orchid bark, perlite, coarse coir chips and a little horticultural charcoal.
Water once the top third of the pot has dried. Keep water out of the rosette centre in winter.

Field Notes: Sectors on a Bird's-Nest Rosette
Because a bird's-nest anthurium produces its leaves from a single tight crown, a sectoral chimera tends to show on one side of the rosette first, and the pattern can swing between leaves as the growth point shifts. Balanced plants put out leaves with roughly a quarter to a half of the blade variegated. Tissue culture has made this form much more available since the early 2020s, and trays of plugs now sell at a fraction of an established plant's price, the same downward path seen with other variegated Pachyneurium forms.
