Species-specific things to check when evaluating a listing
- Check that the narrow strap leaves are firm, not limp or yellowing at the base.
- Look for healthy aerial roots gripping the growing medium — a sign of an established root system.
Anthurium bakeri Morphology
About Anthurium bakeri
Anthurium bakeri is an epiphyte from the tropical Americas, identified by narrow, strap-like leaves 30–60cm long and only 3–5cm wide — considerably narrower than most Anthurium foliage. Mature plants grow pendulously and regularly set bright red berries along the spadix. It tolerates average household humidity better than most collector Anthurium, which keeps it inexpensive and widely available.

Care Guide
Anthurium bakeri Care Guide & Growing Conditions
Chunky, free-draining epiphyte mix: orchid bark, perlite and a little sphagnum moss. As an epiphyte, it dislikes sitting in dense, waterlogged soil.
Water when the top half of the substrate has dried. More forgiving of missed waterings than most collector Anthurium.
Comfortable at 70-80%; tolerates average household humidity better than most species in the genus.
Balanced liquid fertiliser at quarter strength every 4 weeks during active growth.
Every 2 years, or when roots fill the pot — not sensitive to disturbance.
Common Problems
Yellowing leaves
Overwatering or compacted substrate
Repot into a fresher, chunkier mix and let the substrate dry further between waterings.
The Unfussy Strap Leaf
A strap-leaf Anthurium, bakeri produces long, narrow, pendulous foliage. It is a tidy, easy epiphyte that regularly produces bright red, showy berries along its spadix. It requires little fuss compared to its larger-leafed brethren, and its market value remains low and highly accessible for the casual hobbyist.
