About Monstera dubia 'Variegated'

Monstera dubia 'Variegated' is a distinctive shingling aroid native to a wide range from southern Mexico (Veracruz, Chiapas) through tropical Central and South America to Trinidad. In its juvenile stage, it features heart-shaped silver-green leaves that press flat against a climbing support. As the plant climbs and matures, the leaves become perforated and split. This variegated cultivar adds cream-to-pale-yellow marbling and sectors across the foliage while retaining the appressed shingling growth habit of the species.

Before You Buy

Species-specific things to check when evaluating a listing

  • Verify variegation extends into the newest leaf — a fully green newest leaf on an 'albo' or 'mint' monstera is a sign of reversion
  • Check that at least one healthy node is present below the most recent leaf — this is what produces all future growth
  • Inspect petioles closely for scale insects (small brown bumps) which are common on monsteras
  • Compare the variegation level shown to recently sold comps — heavily variegated sections command a significant premium and sellers sometimes photograph the most variegated area rather than the whole plant

Care Guide

Monstera dubia 'Variegated' Care Guide & Growing Conditions

Substrate

Chunky, well-draining mix: 40% potting compost, 30% perlite, 20% orchid bark, 10% worm castings. Monsteras are more tolerant of moisture than most aroids but still need drainage.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm is dry. These are forgiving plants but still susceptible to root rot if kept too wet. Water less in winter.

Humidity

50–70% preferred. More tolerant of typical UK indoor humidity than other aroids, though 60%+ encourages larger leaf development.

Fertilising

Balanced fertiliser at half strength every 2 weeks from spring through summer. Monthly in winter or none at all.

Repotting

Every 12–18 months when roots emerge from drainage holes. Provide a moss pole or support — climbing encourages larger leaf production.

Common Problems

Problem

No fenestrations (splits/holes)

Cause

Plant is juvenile, or insufficient light

Fix

Ensure bright indirect light and allow the plant to mature — fenestrations develop with age and better conditions

Problem

Yellow leaves

Cause

Overwatering or nutrient deficiency

Fix

Check soil moisture before watering; begin a regular fertilising routine in growing season

Problem

Brown patches on leaves

Cause

Sunburn or cold water on leaves

Fix

Avoid direct sun; water at the base and ensure water is room temperature

Field Notes · Vol. 110 April 2024

The Variegated Shingle King

Monstera dubia is the classic 'shingle plant', growing its heart-shaped juvenile leaves flat against tree trunks. As it climbs high into the canopy, it develops massive, split, fenestrated leaves. The variegated form displays splashes of cream and yellow. The flat, appressed growth of the juvenile leaves is an evolutionary strategy to avoid wind displacement and maximize contact with host bark, allowing adhesive roots to secure the stem.
