About Philodendron sharoniae

Thomas Croat formally described Philodendron sharoniae in 2016, naming the species in honour of Sharon Davidson, a field companion who supported his collecting expeditions. The plant is native to wet forests ranging from Valle del Cauca in Colombia south to Carchi, Esmeraldas and Pichincha provinces in Ecuador. It grows as a climbing hemiepiphyte producing long strap-like leaves with transverse pleated ridges between lateral veins. It is closely related to Philodendron tenue, requiring vertical support to develop mature leaf lengths exceeding 60 cm.

Field Notes: Wet Choco Foothills

Thomas B. Croat published Philodendron sharoniae in 2016, naming the taxon in honour of Sharon Davidson, who assisted on numerous field expeditions with her husband Chris Davidson. This species inhabits rainforests from western Colombia to northwestern Ecuador at elevations from 40 to 2300 metres. In habitat, it climbs wet tree trunks, absorbing ambient moisture through adventitious aerial roots produced at each node. Its corrugated, plicate foliage channels rain runoff efficiently off the blade surface in high-precipitation environments.
