Alocasia wentii Morphology
About Alocasia wentii
Alocasia wentii, commonly known as Hardy Elephant Ear, is a robust species native to New Guinea. It is famous for its large, broadly ovate leaves that display a dual coloration. The upper surface is a glossy, deep green with a metallic sheen, while the underside features a deep, metallic purple-bronze or reddish-purple hue. The leaves are supported by thick, fleshy light-green petioles rising from a robust subterranean rhizome tuber.

Before You Buy
Species-specific things to check when evaluating a listing
- Widely available and inexpensive for the plain species, so be cautious of pricing that implies rarity
- Check the leaf underside for a deep metallic purple-bronze or reddish-purple hue: this dual-colour contrast is the defining trait of the species
- Aurea, Albo and Pink colour forms have well-documented price premiums (£42-£52 vs £5 median) backed by substantial sample sizes (22-37 sales); confirm which form you're being offered before paying more
- Confirm the petiole is thick and fleshy, arising from a rhizome tuber rather than a bare corm
A Two-Tone Leaf, Well Documented
Wentii's defining feature is genuinely visible from across a room: a glossy, metallic deep green upper leaf surface paired with a deep purple-bronze or reddish underside, a dual coloration that's easy to check simply by lifting a leaf. It's one of the more affordable, easier-going species in the genus, native to New Guinea's highland and rainforest understory rather than the more demanding limestone-karst habitats that produce many rarer jewel Alocasia. The Aurea, Albo and Pink colour forms bred from it have unusually solid price data behind them (22 to 37 recorded sales each), giving more confidence in those premiums than the single-sale estimates common elsewhere on the site.
