About Alocasia lauterbachiana (EngL.) A.Hay

Alocasia lauterbachiana is a self-heading terrestrial aroid originating from the wet tropical habitats of Northern New Guinea to the Bismarck Archipelago. It thrives in warm, humid forest conditions, growing from a compact basal structure with fibrous feeder roots. This species is characterized by its upright habit and long, narrow, sword-like leaves with distinctive undulating margins. The upper surfaces are green, while the undersides typically exhibit darker purplish tones, making it a unique ornamental.

Field Notes · Vol. 110 June 2023

Lean, Angular, and Rather Good

Lauterbachiana is one of those long, lean aroids that makes a statement with sheer geometry rather than texture or iridescence. The leaves are lance-shaped, deeply lobed, borne on burgundy petioles — it looks like something a set designer would specify for a botanically themed thriller. Formally described by Engler from New Guinea in 1920 and brought into wider cultivation considerably later. Grows reasonably willingly if you keep it warm and produces pups with genuine generosity, which at least means you can recoup some dignity when you inevitably break the first one. A proper plant, honestly priced.
