Alocasia 'Sarian' Morphology
About Alocasia 'Sarian'
Alocasia 'Sarian' is a cultivated hybrid developed from tropical Alocasia species native to Southeast Asia. It grows in warm, humid, and shaded understory conditions, with large, sagittate leaves that have wavy or subtly serrated margins and contrasting pale venation. The plant has an upright, self-heading growth habit, arising from a compact corm-like basal structure that produces fibrous feeder roots.
A Hybrid That Earns Its Keep
A cross between Alocasia zebrina and Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek,' the 'Sarian' hybrid is named after plantsman Angelo Sarian who first documented it. It has proven remarkably robust in cultivation — faster-growing and more forgiving than either parent, with large arrowhead leaves on distinctively striped, spotted petioles that lean toward the zebrina side. More vigour, more leaf, less temperament. Not the sort of thing to cause a bidding war, but an entirely honest hybrid that performs reliably and looks excellent in a large pot. Garden centres would be selling it for £8 if they had any sense.
