Variegated Mexicanum Philodendron

Morphology
About
Philodendron mexicanum 'Variegated' is a spectacular climbing aroid native to the tropical forests stretching from Mexico to western Colombia. In cultivation, it is highly prized for its striking variegation and prefers warm, humid environments with bright indirect light and vertical support to mature. The plant is famed for its large, elongated sagittate to hastate leaves that feature pronounced posterior lobes and narrow central blades. Its smooth, glossy foliage is adorned with marbled cream-to-yellow variegation distributed in eye-catching sectors and speckles. As it climbs, it produces green petioles and abundant aerial roots at the nodes.

How prices are calculated: The AA Price uses verified eBay UK completed auction data — we take the trimmed mean (removing the top and bottom 20% of prices) to produce a fair-value guide. When recent auction data is unavailable, the AA Price falls back to the current UK retail average. All prices are in GBP and updated automatically.

The Dog-Eared Forest Climber
Philodendron mexicanum is famous for its heteroblastic leaf shapes—moving from small, heart-shaped juvenile leaves to enormous, dog-eared (sagittate-hastate) mature blades with long lobes. The variegated cultivar, which displays yellow and cream marbled patterns, is highly coveted. During our Chocó expedition in 2022, we noted how neotropical climbers of this group maximize forest understory light interception. The variegation pattern adds a spectacular contrast to the deep green gloss of the mature leaf blades, although the reduced chlorophyll concentration makes it a slow grower.
