Before You Buy

Species-specific things to check when evaluating a listing

  • Confirm the rhizome is firm throughout — soft spots indicate rot
  • Check there is at least one healthy growing tip visible
  • Inspect leaf undersides for thrips (silvery stippling) and scale insects (small brown bumps on petioles)
  • Crawling philodendrons ship poorly if carelessly packaged — check seller reviews mention careful packing

About Philodendron 'Dean McDowell'

Philodendron 'Dean McDowell' is a horticultural hybrid believed to be a cross between Philodendron gloriosum and Philodendron pastazanum, two widely grown ground-crawling Philodendrons. It combines traits of both parents: the velvety deep green leaf surface and contrasting pale venation of gloriosum, with the larger leaf potential of pastazanum, on a terrestrial rhizomatous plant that creeps along the substrate rather than climbing. New leaves emerge rolled and tightly furled before unfurling to reveal the dark surface with prominent primary venation. Feeder roots emerge from nodes along the running rhizome. It was selected for foliage quality and performance in cultivation, and suits collectors who prefer crawling species to climbing ones.

Propagation Guide

How to Propagate Philodendron 'Dean McDowell'

Difficulty
Moderate
Time to Establish

4-8 months

Single-node cuttings root readily in moist sphagnum or water. Maintain 70%+ humidity and bottom warmth for best results.

Care Guide

Philodendron 'Dean McDowell' Care Guide & Growing Conditions

Substrate

Chunky, well-draining mix: 40% orchid bark, 30% perlite, 20% sphagnum moss, 10% worm castings. A wide, shallow pot suits the crawling growth habit.

Watering

Water when the top 3–4 cm is dry. These terrestrial species are slightly more forgiving than climbers but still hate waterlogged roots.

Humidity

65–80%. Consistent high humidity produces larger, better-formed leaves.

Fertilising

Quarter-strength balanced fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season. Ease off in winter.

Repotting

Repot into a wider (not deeper) container when the rhizome reaches the pot edge. Every 18–24 months typically.

Common Problems

Problem

Brown leaf edges

Cause

Low humidity or cold draughts

Fix

Increase humidity and keep away from windows and vents in winter

Problem

Root rot

Cause

Overwatering or poor drainage

Fix

Repot into fresh chunky substrate; trim any affected roots

Problem

Slow growth

Cause

Low light or cold temperatures

Fix

Ensure 18–26°C and a brighter indirect light position

A Cultivar of Considerable Size

Philodendron 'Dean McDowell' is a named cultivar derived from tropical South American Philodendron ancestry, growing into one of the larger-leaved terrestrial Philodendron cultivars available in the UK market. At accessible price tier. Named horticultural cultivars occupy an interesting position in collector culture: they have the legitimacy of a defined name and consistent characteristics, but the absent parentage documentation that makes botanical context unavailable. A fine large-leaved plant regardless of the taxonomy of its origins.
