About Dieffenbachia 'Camille'

Camille is one of the most widely sold variegated Dieffenbachia cultivars: a broad leaf with a deep cream-coloured centre filling most of the blade, bordered by a solid green margin. A bushy, compact grower reaching around 50cm, it's become a standard low-maintenance choice for brightening shaded interior corners.

Before You Buy

Species-specific things to check when evaluating a listing

  • Confirm the cream centre fills most of the blade with only a solid green margin; a plant with more green than cream may be a different variegated Dieffenbachia cultivar
  • Check for a bushy, compact habit around 50cm rather than a single leggy cane
  • Sap contains calcium oxalate crystals and is a mouth/skin irritant if chewed or handled carelessly; keep cuttings away from pets and children
  • Check stem nodes are firm, without soft or blackened patches

The Standard Centre-Stripe

Camille is the cultivar most people picture when they hear 'variegated Dieffenbachia': a deep cream centre taking up most of the blade, framed by a clean solid-green margin, on a compact, bushy plant that rarely needs staking. It's become something of a benchmark for the genus's other variegated hybrids, several of which are really variations on the same basic centre-stripe idea with a different balance of cream to green. Worth remembering, as with all Dieffenbachia, that the sap carries calcium oxalate crystals, a genuine, if mild, irritant if chewed, which is where the plant's 'Dumb Cane' name comes from.
