About Spathiphyllum wallisii

The Peace Lily is one of the few common aroids grown as much for its flowers as its foliage, producing white spathes that curve around a creamy central spadix. Its glossy, dark green lance-shaped leaves form a dense rosette that tolerates the low light of shaded interiors better than almost any other houseplant, and it droops noticeably when thirsty, recovering within hours of watering. Native to the forest floor of Central and South American rainforests, it grows in the deep shade beneath the canopy, which explains its unusual comfort indoors away from bright windows. It is frequently cited in indoor air quality studies, adding to its popularity in homes and offices alike.

Before You Buy

Species-specific things to check when evaluating a listing

  • Widely available and inexpensive: be cautious of pricing implying rarity for the plain species
  • A drooping, wilted appearance in a listing photo isn't necessarily a sign of poor health; this species droops noticeably when thirsty and recovers within hours of watering
  • For the variegated 'Domino' or 'Picasso' forms, confirm the white/cream pattern in photos matches the specific named cultivar rather than assuming any patterned Peace Lily is interchangeable
  • Check for a full, multi-leaf clump rather than a single leaf at this price point

The Drooping Isn't a Warning Sign

Peace Lily is one of the few common aroids on this site grown as much for flowers as foliage, and its most useful trait for a buyer is actually its most alarming-looking one: it droops sharply when thirsty, recovering within hours of a proper watering. A wilted plant in a listing photo isn't automatically a sick plant. Its comfort in low light traces back to its native habitat on the floor of Colombian and Venezuelan rainforests, growing in deep shade beneath a closed canopy, the same conditions that make it tolerate a shaded corner of a room without complaint.
