About Bucephalandra 'Kedagang'

Bucephalandra 'Kedagang' is a well-known cultivar in the botanical and aquascaping hobbies. It is characterized by small, narrow, lanceolate leaves with strongly ruffled margins. The upper leaf surfaces are dark (almost blue-black to deep olive green) with a metallic iridescence and fine silver speckling. The leaf undersides and creeping rhizomes are reddish-purple. It is a slow-growing rheophyte that grows submerged or emersed in high humidity, anchoring itself to rocks or wood via its root system.

Before You Buy

Species-specific things to check when evaluating a listing

  • Confirm whether the plant is being sold in submersed (aquatic) or emersed (terrarium) form, as growth rate and appearance differ between the two
  • Check the rhizome is firm with visible healthy roots, not soft or discoloured; this is where the plant anchors to hardscape
  • Ask for a close-up photo showing the metallic iridescence and fine silver speckling on the upper leaf surface, the defining trait against plainer Bucephalandra
  • This species grows very slowly; do not expect rapid size increase even under good conditions

Colour From Two Directions

Kedagang is a good example of why Bucephalandra photos can be misleading depending on the angle. The upper leaf surface carries a dark, almost blue-black to olive-green iridescence with fine silver speckling, while the underside and the creeping rhizome itself run reddish-purple. A listing photo showing only the top of the leaf misses half the plant's actual colouring. As a rheophyte adapted to basalt rocks in fast-flowing Bornean streams, it's built to anchor onto hardscape via its root system rather than grow in substrate, and growth stays slow regardless of whether it's kept submersed or emersed.
