Monstera oreophila Madison Morphology
About Monstera oreophila Madison
Monstera oreophila is a climbing species native to the misty montane forests of Costa Rica and Panama. As a hemiepiphyte, it uses adventitious roots to ascend tree trunks in the humid forest understory. It has elongated, elliptic leaves with perforations that develop as the plant reaches maturity. Its foliage ranges from matte to glossy, with characteristically long, tapering leaf tips.

Mountain-Loving Monstera
Oreophila means 'mountain-loving,' which accurately describes a Costa Rican to Panamanian Monstera adapted to higher elevation forest conditions than most of its lowland relatives. Cooler temperatures, consistent cloud moisture, and higher light levels characterise the montane habitats this species occupies — which is relevant to UK cultivation since montane species frequently perform better in the British climate than their lowland relatives, due to the closer alignment with northern European seasonal temperature profiles. A useful and interesting plant for this reason.
