Monstera costaricensis Engl. & K.Krause Morphology
About Monstera costaricensis Engl. & K.Krause
Monstera costaricensis is a tropical wet-forest climber native to Costa Rica and Panama. It thrives in shaded to mid-canopy conditions, growing as a hemiepiphyte on tree trunks using aerial roots for support and nutrient absorption. This species is distinguished by its elliptic to ovate leaves with glossy green, leathery textures and moderate internal perforations.

Central America's Overlooked Climber
Costa Rica and Panama host a wide diversity of Monstera species, and Monstera costaricensis represents one of the medium-sized, moderately fenestrated species of that region that has filtered into the collector trade without quite achieving mainstream status. Thomas Croat and colleagues at Missouri Botanical Garden have done considerable work on Central American Araceae that illuminates the distinctiveness of these regional species from one another; reading it gives proper context for why a 'Costa Rican Monstera' is a legitimate category rather than a marketing invention.
