Begonia malachosticta is a striking species native to the humid, shaded tropical forests of Ecuador. It thrives in the warm, moist understory where filtered light, high humidity, and a rich organic substrate from leaf litter and decaying wood create ideal growing conditions. This upright cane begonia features distinctive setose red stems and petioles. Its asymmetrical, elongate-ovate leaves have a dark green upper surface densely spotted with pale green to whitish maculations, contrasted by red undersides, and the plant exhibits a natural cane-like branching habit.
