About Monstera pittieri Engl.

Monstera pittieri is a slender hemiepiphyte native to the wet tropical forests spanning from southern Costa Rica to Colombia. As an understory climber, it thrives in high humidity and filtered light, often ascending trees before forming a pendulous habit as it matures. The plant is distinguished by narrowly ovate to elliptic leaves with fenestrations that become more pronounced with maturity. Its thin to coriaceous foliage shows a contrast between dark green upper surfaces and lighter green undersides.

Field Notes · Vol. 11 May 2023

Named for Henri Pittier

Named for Henri Pittier, the Swiss botanist who surveyed Central American and Venezuelan flora extensively in the late 19th and early 20th centuries — Pittier was one of the founders of organised botanical exploration in Costa Rica. A Monstera from southern Costa Rica to Colombia, at upper middle tier pricing. Moderate collector interest. The name is the most interesting thing about it for the botanically literate collector; the plant itself is a respectable species Monstera without particular drama.
