About Monstera membranacea Madison

Monstera membranacea is a species native to the humid, wet tropical forests of Costa Rica and western Panama. It is a climber that ascends trees using aerial roots, thriving in warm, shaded understories with high humidity and rich, organic soils. This thin-textured Monstera features delicate fenestration that develops with maturity, giving it a lacy appearance.

Thin-Leaved Rarity

A Costa Rican to western Panamanian species with somewhat thinner, more membranous leaf texture than most Monstera — hence the name. Genuinely uncommon in cultivation and in its natural range, the latter restricted to the relatively small territory between Costa Rica's Pacific slopes and western Panama. Worth seeking for the Central American Monstera specialist. The thinner leaf texture makes it somewhat less tolerant of low humidity than thicker-leaved species, which is relevant to UK cultivation given how often 'high humidity' is aspirational rather than achieved.
